WATER PROJECTS IN JERUSALEM - Hezekiah's Tunnel

The City of Jerusalem is located on the border of the desert and water is a big issue if you cannot find it. In the The City of David (Jerusalem) there was only one source of water: the Gihon Spring. The location of this spring, was outside of the walls of the fortified city, leaving it very vulnerable. In the end of the 8th century BCE the Assyrians conquered the Kindom of Israel.

King Hezekiah who ruled the Kindom of Judea understood that he was next. He, therefore, decided that he must do something to save the city. He understood that without water the city could not withstand a siege. He began to dig a tunnel to bring the water of the Gihon Spring (outside of the walls) into safety within the city walls. This was an amazing magnificent project. They started digging from two ends, until they met. The tunnel length is 533 meters (more than .3 mile). This entire project was accomplished with 2,700 years ago technology. Amazing! You will be able to see this incredible project as part of the visit to the City of David during one of the upcoming Relive the Bible Tours. I want to thank Pastor Andy Cook for this excellent video. Enjoy the video.
