David Escapes from King Saul

“David therefore departed thence, and escaped to the cave of Adullam...” (1 Samuel 22:1)

Today we’ll visit the cave of Adullam and understand why David had to flee from King Saul.

During the ReLive the Bible Tours, we will be walking in the footsteps of King David.

King Saul understood that David was becoming more popular than him (“Saul hath slain his thousands, and David his ten thousands…”) and that his rule was in danger. Saul, despite giving David his daughter’s (Michal) hand in marriage (as a prize for the victory over Goliath), decided he had no other choice but to hunt down David.

“And Saul spoke to Jonathan his son, and to all his servants, that they should slay David; but Jonathan Saul's son delighted much in David. And Jonathan told David, saying: 'Saul my father seeketh to slay thee; now therefore, I pray thee, take heed to thyself in the morning, and abide in a secret place, and hide thyself.” (1 Samuel 19:1-2)

David had to escape and his first stop was the city of Gath (a Philistines’ city, Goliath’s city…his enemies). Next stop was the cave of Adullam.

Adullam is located in ‘Shefelat Yehuda’ – the land of the tribe of Judah. Today this place is open to visitors.
