Sukkot – Feast of the Tabernacle
Sukkot is one of the 3 feasts that the Jews used to make a pilgrimage to the Temple in Jerusalem from all over the world.
There are a few reasons why we celebrate this feast.
As is mentioned in the Bible, Book of Leviticus, ch: 23 where it describes why and how to celebrate. To remind us that when we fled from Egypt from slavery to freedom and walked 40 years in the desert (Sinai) we used to stay in the tabernacles. So today, during Sukkot, it is custom to build a ‘Sukkah’ (tabernacle) and to live in the ‘Sukkah’ for the 7 days of the feast.
The Feast of the Harvest – this is the time of the year when the wheat, olives and other crops are harvested before the rain season.
The ‘mitzvah’ (command) is to be happy, celebrate and invite people to be your guests in the ‘Sukkah’ – to host them.
There is a special blessing for the 4 species: Lulav (branch of Palm tree), Hadas (Myrtle tree), Arava (Willow tree) and the fruit of the Citron.
In my next post tomorrow, and the ones to follow next week, I’ll be talking and explaining more about this feast, its traditions, and its customs and how it is mentioned both in the Old and the New Testament.
