The Dead Sea – the lowest point on earth.
Its famously hyper-saline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts.
The name comes from the fact that its salinity prevents the existence of any life forms. Nothing can live in this salty water. Not fish, not plants...nothing. Oddly enough, there is lots of life in the Dead Sea. It is a very popular tourist attraction hosting many visitors every day. This salty water provides unique healing properties. The unique chemical compound and special climate make the Dead Sea a popular Health & Spa global attraction for tourists from all over the world.
The location of the Dead Sea is in the Judean Desert, 50 km long and 300 meters deep. It is a mere 20 min. Drive from Jerusalem. The surrounding desert offers many oases and historic sites. The two most prominent historical sites are: Masada - the fortress and Palace that Herod built for himself as a refuge; Qumran - the place where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. As well, the area of Sodom, mentioned in the Bible.
Swimming in the Dead Sea is a once in a lifetime experience that one never forgets. All you need is to lie on your back and float on the water. You can even take your book with you and read while floating. It may seem bizarre but it is very enjoyable.
Many of the minerals, such as: magnesium, calcium, bromine, potassium & more are used in different industries.
In my humble opinion this is one of the 7 Wonders of the World, even though officially it is one of the 14 Wonders of the World.
All these and more make the Dead Sea so very fascinating, so different so interesting and make it one of the most wonderful places to visit in Israel.
