Sounds from the Past

The City of David is being excavated for quite some time now. In a previous post of mine, I discussed the Pilgrims Tunnel – a drainage tunnel - that served the inhabitants of Jerusalem duri ng the 2nd Holy Temple period. It is a large drainage tunnel or sewer that runs down the Tyropoeon Valley (nicknamed the “Cheese Makers Valley”) and once drained runoff and waste water from the city of Jerusalem. It flowed to the Siloam Pool and outside of the city. It is located directly under the Pilgrims Road where the pilgrim used to ascend to the Holy Temple from the Siloam Pool.

A unique golden bell was found during excavations in this tunnel. When the Romans re-conquered Jerusalem in 70AD, some of the Jews found refuge in this tunnel. Maybe, one of those hiding in this tunnel was one of the High Priests or maybe this golden bell fell from his garment and flowed with the water into this tunnel. Archaeologists are sure this is one of the bells that were sewn to the High Priests’ garments. This is a fascinating find!

What does this bell sound like? What makes the bell ring? What was the sound that the people of Jerusalem heard when the High Priest approached? Watch the video to learn all about this and find answers to these questions.

Enjoy the two videos.

I’d like to thank Eli Shukrun & the City of David for these videos.
