The History of Beth-Shemesh

Beth Shemesh is located not far from Jerusalem. Near this city is the Tel of Beth Shemesh that is mentioned in the Bible as part of the Dan (tribe) area. A little later, after the people of Dan moved up north, the tribe of Judea settled there.

One of the famous prophets, Samson the Hero, was born in Tzora (nearby Beth Shemesh. After his time, in the Kings era, in the time of King David, the city flourished, grew, and developed. The city of Beth Shemesh is mentioned several times in the Bible. In 586 BCE, at the time the Babylonians conquered Israel, they destroyed the city, and it was abandoned.
