The Magnificent Palace of King David

I’d like to pay a tribute to the late Dr. Eilat Mazar, who passed away this week. Dr. Eilat Mazar came from a family of archaeologists. Her key discovery was the Palace of King David (most of the archaeologists agree with her about the location of this palace).

Today I’ll be talking about this magnificent palace of King David and the other Kings of Judea.

The palace was found on the north side of the City of David (Jerusalem) and it was built within a fortress, within a fortified city, to protect the King, even from his people.

Inside the palace, a Phoenician capital was found. This type of capital is not the typical capitals found in Israel. As well, many seals (bullas) were found with the names of people in the Bible – people who worked for the King. To date, a seal signed by the King himself, has yet to be found.

When visiting this site, we can better understand the Bible as we look down from the Palace to the below neighborhood of government officials. Try to imagine King David looking down one morning and seeing Batsheva bathing on her rooftop….everything becomes to be very clear…
